paul ryan's not hard right. ryan is telling the truth about a medicare and medicaid social security system that's going bankrupt and you know it. >> yeah, but what paul ryan does with that money doesn't put it into deficit reduction which you've been arguing for. he puts it all into tax cuts for the wealthy. >> well, the president didn't put $716 billion that he took out of medicare into deficit reduction. he put it into obamacare. isn't that just as reckless? >> no. because the president had -- we were dealing with health care at the time. the president will put significant medicare savings and tax savings, revenue increases, into deficit reduction. the hard right -- and i believe paul ryan is part of that hard right -- i think you've given him a pass. >> i disagree. >> i know you do. but his budget does not reduce the deficit for 40 years and takes almost all the medicare money that he saves under his plan, give him credit for stepping up to the plate on that, and puts it -- and the hard thing for a republican

paul ryan's an interesting character. going back to that first clip, mitt romney in that debate by ted kennedy. that was a brutal beat down. what lessons do you think he learned as a man, as a politician that he's applied to this campaign? >> i think mitt romney is a sales man, a business man. a not an id logical figure. he's basically selling a process of fixing things. he walked out of the moment i think believing strongly that if he was going to win anything, he had to have a basic sales p pitch. a basic guide who delivered, not ideology, not a big idea. we've never found any big idea that romney had politically, but he's a fixer and when 2012 comes along and he looks at the economy, that's what i was made to do. >> i got to tell you, just all the many of the critics claim that the president of the united states is a remote personality. just from your verbal description of what's in the film, it can sort of get an appreciation for the remoteness. >> of course. for both of them. >> but for a president who, for a young b

paul ryan and joe biden. >> that is going to be -- >> people love to say these vice presidential debates don't matter. go back to 2004, they do matter. >> i think this one does. >> and they matter because george w. bush had a very bad first debate. but you know what? dick cheney, sitting down, stemmed that tide and actually gave republicans a reason -- everybody was painting dick cheney as darth vader, as they always do. he sat down and he just absolutely demolished john edwards. it looked like there was an adult and there was a child in the room. and it actually gave the bush campaign new life. >> i think paul ryan represents, i mean, really specific ideas. >> right. >> you know? it's going to be -- >> i think it's -- and i think it's going to be great. you know, the pressure, actually, i would have never believed i would have said this 24 hours ago. it's going to be on joe biden because they can't have two bad debate performances in a row. then suddenly a one-night story becomes a narrative. right. >> it's a different ball game than four years ago. >>> still ahead, senior advisers to t

and i think will do very well in the debate along with paul ryan. but your column, talking about obama's off night. can you help us out here? we're trying to figure out what happened to president obama. where was he? >> where was he? that's the question. it was really, you know, you kind of watched the thing unfold and just wondered when it was -- when the debate was going to start, basically, because -- and when the president was going to, you know, become president obama again. all the stuff you guys said in the last segment is probably right about that performance. and it's not that unusual, if you look historically for an incumbent president to have a rough time out of the blocks on the debates. and they tend not to do very well in the first one. that was certainly true this year more than most years, i think. you know, look. on the plane coming back, i was with one of the president's most senior advisers who just, you know, said hey, what can i say? let's move on to the next one. he had a bad night and we'll have a better night next time. >> ok
